Nutri-Sport Nutrition Tip: WHAT you eat is as important as WHEN you eat

Anyone who has ever followed a regular workout regimen knows that one of the biggest challenges to overcome is muscle soreness. We workout to push our bodies to new levels of physical performance, but we can also suffer sore and aching muscles as a result. The fact is our muscles grow the most after we workout, which is when damaged tissue is repaired. As a result of this tissue damage, soreness is usually a byproduct of most proper workout programs.

While all essential amino acids are vital for making gains in muscular size and strength-indeed, leucine stands out as having the most anabolic properties, in addition to whey and carbs.

Muscle performance, recovery and nutrient timing are linked.  The body must be provided with the essential fuels and supporting nutrients at the proper times in the optimal amounts, which helps build tissue and support muscles during a workout.  Additionally, this assists in speeding and enhancing the muscle recovery process. The faster and more effectively you can recover, the more potential you have for muscle growth.

Based on the research study referenced here, for maximum performance, an amino acid supplement along with dextrose before/during training is optimal.  Post workout having whey protein that contains at least 3 grams of luecine in addition to dextrose or maltodextrin for an increase of insulin (which is needed for protein synthesis to occur). This is further proof the importance of carbohydrates post workout, as the research shows protein alone did not promote as much protein synthesis as whey with carbs.  As always, we will continue to keep our ears to the ground to find the science, not advertising, to get you results, not a sales pitch.
